When not writing, Alec enjoys being out in nature, keeping busy with gardening, working on the lawn, and going on hikes. He plays alto and tenor saxophone in bands around Wisconsin, works on old motorcycles, cooks and cans. When it's not snowing and the salt is off the roads, he and Alicia enjoy riding motorcycle in the Great Western and Northern parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. And yes, he enjoys reading. His favorite authors? Dean Koontz, Richard Chizmar, Edgar Allan Poe, just to name a few. He also enjoys reading on the matter of personal growth and improvement.
Interesting fact #1: Alec has played the saxophone since he was in the fifth grade but sold it to buy his first car – 1967 black over red Ford Galaxie with a 390 under the hood - when he was sixteen. He began playing again after he had problems sitting in a chair and he could not breath well. (30 years of smoking Marlboro Reds will do that to some people. I don’t do that anymore.)
During all his playing years, he had never done much in the true Jazz fashion, even though he had played in a Big Band for over ten years showcasing the hits of the 1930’s – 1980’s. Big Band, Broadway, country, symphonic, and of course, John Sousa marches, but not true Jazz. Enter Doug Terhune.
Doug had learned under the auspices of Bill Holcombe, a very, VERY talented arranger and composer. Google Bill and you may be impressed, too.
Due to Doug’s mellow nature and great patience, Alec has been granted the gift of being taught by Doug in the realm of true Jazz. Is Alec a great musician? Let me answer it with a question. Is any true musician at the level they wish to be? (No.)
Interesting fact #2: Alec and Alicia Gould are pen/editor names for Don and Gloria. Why? As a kid, Don enjoyed reading Mark Twain. Real name? Samuel Clemens. Maybe one day Alec will start using his real name. Possibly when he is in the ranks of Dean Koontz and/or Stephen King. As of today, Alec Gould sounds more like an author’s name than Don.
Alec began writing on a Brother typewriter with a manual keyboard back when he was in second grade.
His first story was about Tommy Turtle and Sammy Snake. It didn't get past the walls of the apartment he grew up in.
Back then he also attempted a school newspaper for his class. (That didn't go over too well. :) )
In high school he had an outdoor column in the school paper, that did a little bit better.
As he got older, writing took a back page to other things in life, but then he got into riding motorcycles. That's when an offer came about to write for a multi-state motorcycle magazine.
He did that for two years then left that to pursue writing short stories and full length books.
He has been told his style is reminiscent of Samuel Clemens -aka Mark Twain-, Edgar Allan Poe, Will Rogers and the poet John Keats.
